No single organization builds every part of a complete storage solution well. The distributed file system, the orchestration that directs data placement across tiers, the hardware the system runs on, the long-term preservation layer, and the deep platform expertise behind it are different specialties. Unique Checksum acts as a lead integrator — coordinating the partners whose components make up a delivered solution so that an institution engages a coherent whole rather than assembling parts from independent vendors itself.
The ecosystem model is what makes the “complete solution” promise on the engagement and services pages real rather than aspirational. Behind a delivered LStore deployment are the platform itself, the orchestration layer, the hardware fleet, and — where retention requirements call for it — the tape preservation tier. Each comes from an organization that specializes in it. Unique Checksum’s role for the engagements it leads is to bring these together into a single integrated delivery with one clear line of accountability, so that the institution has a coherent solution and a single point of coordination rather than a procurement project spread across multiple unrelated suppliers.
This is also why the ecosystem is structured rather than ad hoc. The partners are organized by the role they play in the solution — preservation, data orchestration, AI and compute workload orchestration, hardware and integration, and platform development and support — so that each engagement composes the right specialists for the institution’s actual needs. A complete LStore deployment is composed from several specialties, each a different discipline. The preservation tier is filled today by Spectra Logic and data orchestration by Hammerspace — named partners in the ecosystem. The remaining roles are filled by specialists whose relationships are forming as Unique Checksum takes the platform to market — described here by the function they serve, and to be named as those relationships formalize.
Beyond preservation, a delivered solution draws on four further specialties. There is data orchestration and tiering — the layer that presents a unified namespace across storage tiers and runs the policy-driven placement that directs data across scratch, fast, persistent, and archive storage as access patterns evolve; at ACCRE this layer is provided by Hammerspace, the ecosystem’s data orchestration partner. There is AI and compute workload orchestration — the layer above storage that schedules and provisions the AI and high-performance computing workloads that consume the data, turning a storage platform into part of a complete computing environment. There is hardware and integration — the depot and LServer appliances the platform runs on and the build-and-integration work that turns specified components into a coherent, validated, production-ready fleet. And there is platform development and support — the continued engineering of LStore itself and the deep platform expertise behind the support relationship, the escalation path for institutions running the system in production.
Each of these is a real role in the delivered solution, and each is being filled deliberately as the ecosystem forms. Unique Checksum describes the still-forming roles by function now, rather than naming partners before their relationships are formally announced, because an honest account of how a deployment is composed is more useful to an institution evaluating the platform than a premature roster would be. These relationships are in production at ACCRE as part of the integrated LStore architecture, and are the model for how the wider ecosystem is being built.
Spectra Logic
Spectra Logic has built tape libraries for forty years, spanning entry-class deployments through enterprise-scale archives. At ACCRE, a Spectra Logic library runs in production simultaneously as the LStore archive target, the Constancy backup target, and the CMS Tier 2 tape tier — three workloads on one library. The tape library management capability that makes the LStore integration possible is Unique Checksum intellectual property, extended into the platform as its operational tape tier.

Hammerspace provides the data orchestration layer that unifies the storage tiers under a single global namespace, presenting them to applications as one system and orchestrating placement across them on policy. At ACCRE, Hammerspace orchestrates the high-performance front tiers and the LStore capacity core together, so that active data stays close to compute while capacity scales horizontally beneath it. The orchestration layer is what makes a multi-tier architecture behave as one coherent system rather than a set of separate stores.
